My brother and I inherited a box of home movies from our uncle who had died in the 1970s. Unable to throw it away, the box got shifted around from house to house until a few years ago: we had heard about a tiny scanner that could digitize old film. Suddenly we could see, frame by frame, little segments of life from the early 1930’s and 1940’s. The dreamy far off images intrigued me and I thought some might be interesting to paint. I began to draw and felt engaged in a visceral way. I found my mother and her sister. Painting gave me away to be with them. After a while, I began making monoprints. Pressing my colored drawings into wet paper enhanced the mystery I felt. Here is my mother in 1938.
